King Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix + Review

Post by Bluekunai22001 Sat Apr 18, 2009 2:25 pm

This is my exact review from my GameSpot profile, I reckon my reviews might get more views on here.
My GameSpot: http://www.gamespot.com/users/Bluekunai22001/

This first review will be treated as my review for KH2 and Final Mix+ together sice they are virtually the same game.

--------Kingdom Hearts II and Final Mix+ Review--------

-------The Good-------
New Difficulty Setting, More Boss Battles, Two New Secret Endings, Heaps of New Items, New Areas, Great Graphics, Awesome Story, Brilliant Soundtrack, Great Voiceover Cast, New Minigames, Nice Control Scheme, A Massive Cast of Characters.

-------The Bad-------
Occasional Corny Dialogue, Disney Characters Sometimes Ruin the Serious Mood, The New Heartless were Lazily Made, Those Unfamiliar with Japanese might struggle with the menus, You'll need to find a Swap Magic to play it on NTSC-U or PAL systems.

Story: 9
Music: 9.5
Gameplay: 9.5
Controls: 8.5
Overall: 9.5/10

Kingdom Hearts II was released three years after the highly praised Kingdom Hearts was released in 2002. After buying both games, I instantly fell in love with the series (not literally of course).

The story starts out with you playing as a mysterious new character named Roxas, living with his friends in Twilight Town while being closely watched by two other mysterious figures. As the story progresses, Roxas begins to uncover secrets about his past that he was never supposed to know, and never supposed to remember. Seeing creatures known as Nobodies and encountering a man in a black coat named Axel. Axel claims to be Roxas' friend and mentions Organization XIII. Still oblivious to what is going on, Roxas meets a strange girl named Namine who sheds a little light on his past. After his whole world comes crashing down and he learns that half his life was a lie, Roxas angrily makes his way through Nobodies to discover his other half, Sora, thus ending Roxas' story and the extremely long tutorial and beginning Sora's story.
Sora, Donald and Goofy are now awake again after being in a deep sleep for a year (explained in Chain of Memories).
They learn from their allies that the Heartless are on the move again and a sinister group of Nobodies known as Organization XIII are plotting to recreate Kingdom Hearts.

The gameplay in Kingdom Hearts is reletively similar in each game. You play as Sora/Roxas and fight enemies with either basic melee attacks with the KeyBlade, or magic attacks. You can also use special attacks called Limits with your partners that uses up all of Sora's MP (Magic Points) but executes a powerful attack. You can also become stronger through leveling up and using abilities which may have effects like the ability to Dodge Roll in Final Mix and glide like in KH1 and KH2. As your partners level up, you can also equip them with abilities to benefit their battle abilities and even support you and your other partner, Eg. Donald Heal Spell. Depending on what enemies you fight, you may need to conduct strategies to survive on higher difficulties. Some enemies also pronpt you to use the Reaction Command (Triangle) to counter a move, use a special attack or to finish of a boss.
In KH2FM, the roles of X and O are swapped around so X is jump and O is attack and select, and I like the settings like that, but going back to play Kingdom Hearts or Kingdom Hearts II is weird if you get too used to it.

The music in the game is mostly composed by Yoko Shimomura, with some tracks composed by Kaoru Wada and Nobuo Uematsu returning to compose One Winged Angel for the Sephiroth battle. The game has around 140 tracks and all are expertly made with some epic, sad and heroic sounding themes in the mix. The soundtrack is well constructed and has become my favorite out of any video game compositions.

Final Mix has several bonus' include new battles. The cutscene where Sora fights Roxas is now and actual battle, you can fight the data of every single Organization XIII member including Lexaeus, Zexion, Vexen, Marluxia, Larxene and Roxas. Data battles are like the original battles with the Organization members except they have more health, new attacks and they are much more powerful. Each and every single one of the data battles beats Sephiroth in difficulty. There is also and extra battle with an armoured warrior called "The Enigmatic Soldier" in the game, but he was later revealed to be Terra, a character showing up in Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep. He is the hardest battle in all the Kingdom Hearts games so far, he is even a challange to take down in Beginner mode.
There is also a new area called the "Cavern of Remembrance" where there are loads of treasure chests, tough 'no escape' battles with Nobodies and Heartless and at the end is the room where you can fight the Organization Data Battles.
Sora gains a new Drive Form. This form makes Sora's clothes go to the colours of his attire from KH1, also allowing him to use special techniques from the first game, including Dodge Roll!
You will also find puzzle pieces throughout Final Mix. These pieces will eventually form a picture of official art for KH2. Once a picture is complete, you will recieve items like synthesis gems and potions.
And lastly, there are new Keyblades, one is obtained after beating the Roxas battle (I forgot the name), it increases the chance of getting Final Form or Anti Form. The other is obtained by beating the Thirteen Mushroom heartless scattered through different worlds.

--------Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories Review*--------
*Please note I'm not reviewing the English version, i'm reviewing the one with Final Mix, some things may vary between the two versions.

-------The Good-------
Card system offers strategy, CoM is brought to life in full 3D, Smoothest frame-rate in a Kingdom Hearts Game, Combat is mostly optional, Great Voiceover cast, Awesome story.

-------The Bad-------
The Game is entirely in Japanese making it hard for some people to follow, FMV's look pre-recorded, A lot easier than the GBA version.

Story: 9
Music: 9

Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories was the first KH game released for a Handheld system, yet it had a fun factor that was almost equivelint to it's console brothers.

Re:CoM was recreated for the PS2 for people who didn't have a Game Boy Advance, and it also gave Square-Enix some time to work on Coded, 358/2 Days and Birth By Sleep.

The story starts probably a few hours after the end of Kingdom Hearts. Sora hears some cryptic messages from a man in a black coat saying "Ahead lies something you need...but to claim it, you must lose something dear..."
Sora, Donald and Goofy head off in the direction of the hooded man to find a strange castle. Once inside, the trio learn that they have stumbled into a trap. Castle Oblivion was where they were, and for each floor the go up, they begin to loose their memories. Going through various worlds from his memories and one from deep in his memories (Twilight Town). They learn more about the ambitions of the hooded people and struggle to make it to the top.

Chain of Memories introduced a card system into the Kingdom Hearts combat formula. Cards include attack cards, magic cards, ally cards and special cards obtained from bosses. I'd go into detail, but i'm not a human typewriter.
The card system does add strategy to the game by can take a bit of getting used to if you've played any other Kingdom Hearts games to death.

The battles in this game are still fun. And the first Organization members are reveiled; Vexen, Lexaeus, Zexion, Larxene, Marluxia and Axel.
Although, Axel is the only one to survive until the next game.

I apologise my Re:CoM review was breif, but i've been typing for ages and getting tired of it.

Overall, Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix is giving you more than your moneys worth. Though I must say KH2FM was definately the better out of the two. If you're a hardcore Kingdom Hearts fan who has a Swap Magic for their PS2 or is trying to get one, I recommend this as you first game to order!
